There's been tests done that show that magpies fed and used to humans dont' see them as much of a threat, and tend to swoop less. This however can also prove problematic when the magpies see you as their 'flock' and swoop everyone else that comes by, as they see them as the threat instead!
It's all about balance too: you don't want them becoming too dependant upon you, but usually by adulthood magpies are dependant enough to fend for themselves, and interact with humans less.

Top stuff, we feed our locals magpies occasionally with a bit of mince and they love it. Babies come down for a nibble as well. They are one of the most beautiful birds and they sing one of the most beautiful songs - great to hear them when waking of a morning.

here's how, wait for one to come to your backyard get some bread or raw mince meat and slowly make your way outside and crouch down. it will take them a while to get used to you so just stretch your arm out and flick the meat or bread close to them and they will come for it, keep it up and they will eventually hand feed off you

That's fantastic mate. I've got a tame blackbird, but nothing comes close to the personality and warble of magpies. Brilliant!!! And don't listen to the people telling you not to tame them- they're just jealous.

The irwins do say otherwise though, that animals take care of themselves. I dunno who to believe any more. |
